The softness of the sand, the gentle sounds of the waves and the warmth of the sun will always make for a beautiful Wedding Day. The back drops that are available in Northern Michigan make for a dream Destination Wedding come true.

Congratulations Shanna & Ivan.

Sunsets on the water makes for interesting photography. So many options, never enough sunset time.

Sand on your feet, so natural.

Let the fun begin. As the evening went forward chances were made.

Lake Michigan started looking more and more inviting.

and then the Bride and Groom went for it with a little help from the photographer.

Sunsets on your Wedding day, nothing else like it.

Just like that the Bride & Groom get wet.

The sunset colors make for great silhouettes.

and then the light changes. Sure was great color while it lasted.

A walk into the horizon for the Bride & Groom.

Their day they’ll never forget. Congratulations, I can tell your soul mates for life. It was a pleasure to photograph a part of your special day.

Destination Weddings. A Lake Michigan beach wedding is truly an enchanting and memorable event. The west Michigan coast with beautiful beaches surrounded by magnificent dunes creates a magical setting. This is the special setting the two of you have searched for. Lake Michigan beaches are the perfect place to say “I do.” Whether you are planning a small outdoor service, or a larger more formal ceremony … this lake will work its magic for you.

This scenic coastline is as good as any in the world. Now voted one of America’s favorite area’s in northern Michigan. Charming and majestic dunes are what makes it a romantic getaway destination.

You’ll find something romantically unique about each one. Sometimes it is just the feeling you get walking along the shore as the waves roll over your feet. The sun, a gentle cooling breeze, or watching sailboats from a dune all add magic to the moment.

Weddings on Mackinac Island. Dreams do come true.

Jenny & Adam’s special day at the Grand Hotel. The weather was fabulous and the celebration was their dream come true. Adam waiting for his lovely bride with her flowers in hand.

So many different photograph possibilities with all the windows.

A small family Wedding made for a very relaxed celebration.

We had a couple of hours to take photographs and that is a rearaty with most weddings. Keep that in mind when your planning your wedding day. Schedule as much time as you possibility can with your photographer. Give them time to be creative. They will thank you for it.

The chairs on the Grand porch, the view, and all the smiles.

Horse and carriages are so much of the Island that you just have to photograph the bride and groom with this part of the Island.

The flowers at the Grand Hotel in the spring are fabulous and make for great backdrops…

So many different venues.

Congratulations Jenny & Adam, wish you all the best in your Life travels together.

Don’t forget the rings…

The old-world elegance of Grand Hotel envelops you the moment you step onto Mackinac Island. A horse-drawn carriage taxi or stroll the short distance to the hotel. Your passage will be peaceful, cars aren’t allowed on Mackinac Island, one of the many traditions that still reign from the opening days of Grand Hotel back in 1887. This Victorian-style hotel possesses the world’s longest veranda–a 600-foot porch that stretches the full length of the property, one of Michigan’s oldest golf courses and a wide variety of leisure attractions. The property has been an icon of summer resorts since it opened, but the Grand achieved cinematic fame when the 1980 film Somewhere in Time, starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour, was shot on location. But don’t let its turn-of-the-century facade cast the impression that the property itself is antiquated. The slower, more leisurely pace of the past merges with all the amenities of the present to make your stay memorable.

Six of the suites are named for first ladies Jacqueline Kennedy, Lady Bird Johnson, Betty Ford, Rosalynn Carter, Nancy Reagan and Barbara Bush, who were all consulted in the designs. A variety of special package deals like the Murder Mystery Weekend and Somewhere In Time offer a variety of ways to enjoy the distinctive property. Come and enjoy the beauty that Mackinac Island has to offer.

Lilacs symbolize love.

Syringa (Lilac) is a genus of about 20–25 cultivated species of flowering plants in the olive family (Oleaceae).

In addition to the cultivated species of Lilacs, there are many more hybrids, and over 1,000 total varieties of Lilac bushes (along with a few varieties of actual trees).

Lilacs are native to Eastern Europe and Asia. The colonists brought them to America in the 17th century.

The term “Lilac trees” can be mistakenly attached to any of the many varieties of Lilac bushes. Lilac shrubs/bushes grow from six to twenty feet tall. True Lilac trees, like the Peking tree Lilac and the Japanese tree Lilac, both from Asia, may reach heights over 30 feet.

Lilacs can vary in shape and/or form. Some may be rounded, vase-like, tall and spreading, tall and straight or a combination of these shapes.

Flowering varies between mid-spring to early summer and, unfortunately, normally only lasts two to three weeks, depending on the species and the weather.

Lilac flowers span a wonderful array of colors (white, violet, blue, lilac, pink, red, purple and some even bicolored). Shades vary depending on weather (hot versus cool and dry versus wet), year, soil, environment and overall location differences.

Lilacs have pyramidal clusters of blossoms with both single and double varieties – all with glossy green leaves.

It is the cultivar and species of Lilac bush which affects the fragrance, NOT the flower’s color.

Aside from Roses, there is no flower as beautiful and aromatic as Lilacs. Of the two, Lilacs have a stronger, more intoxicating scent which carries quite a distance.

Although Lilacs display flowers among the most delicate of the ornamentals, the plants are among the hardiest. Some newer hybrid varieties can survive winter temperatures of -60ºF.

You prune Lilacs immediately after the enjoyment of the fragrant blossoms in the late Spring/early Summer.

Lilacs were grown in America’s first botanical gardens. Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew them in their gardens. Lilac bushes can live for hundreds of years, so who knows, a bush planted way back when may actually still be around…

Photographing Sunrises and Sunsets

There are a couple of elements that are worth thinking about when it comes to sunrise and sunset photography – the use of objects, timing, focus, creativity, light metering, and clouds and the weather. Firstly, many photographers recommend finding an object apart from the sun to use in their photo. By having an object, such as a tree, a silhouette of a person, a church spire, or some foreground detail, it adds value to the photo and attracts the eye. Some people may want to try getting tree branches in the picture to frame the sun.

Timing is another vital factor of sunrise and sunset photography. It is important to know when the sun will rise or set. timeanddate.com can help people find out when the sun will set in their approximate location. After getting an idea of when the sun will rise or set, it is a good idea to arrive on location early. Arriving an hour early allows people to inspect the surroundings of the scene and understand where would be a good spot to take photos, and props or objects that may create a more vivid photo. For sunrises, the best time for a photo may be in the winter because the days are shorter so people do not have to wake up too early to see the sun rise.

It is also important for photographers to look at the camera’s focus. Many cameras have an autofocus ready light to confirm that they are focused. However, some photographers recommend setting the camera on a manual setting and focusing the camera on infinity to lock the focus, hence avoiding a blurry photo.

Being creative can be achieved in more ways than one. For example, with the right amount of exposure, one can create different effects for their photo. According to ePHOTOzine, if the camera has built-in flash, set the exposure to underexpose the background and allow the flash to provide the correct exposure for foreground detail. Foreground detail and a wider aperture can throw the background subtly out of focus with flash to create better exposure for a foreground object. Do not over expose the sky and give emphasis to the sun. Silhouettes of objects can be made by keeping the picture metering with a strong back light source, creating under exposure for front objects. It is also recommended to set the camera to the smallest aperture to give a greater depth of field. To create motion in waves at a beach, some photographers select a half second shutter speed at f/9.5 and rest the camera on some rocks. With composition, it is best to keep the sun up and the sea down. Try to get a scenic view and avoid obstructing objects such as artificial lights (including traffic lights).

Light metering is another noteworthy element of sunset photography. EPHOTOzine recommends taking a reading of the camera meter. The best thing to do is point the camera at the sky and move position so the sun is just out of the frame. Take a reading and use the exposure lock or set the exposure manually with this reading as reference. This ensures that you open up a stop or two so that the surrounds have a little more detail in the shadow areas. Under-exposure can give rich and dramatic colors of the sun. Long exposure is best to be used when the sun sets and light is low, particularly at a beach, to give smooth, misty surface depending on the amount of waves, when the sea is part of the picture.

With regard to clouds and the weather, it is best to check the weather forecast, which can be done through timeanddate.com. The website includes weather forecasts featured information on web pages for many cities around the world. Light clouds or haze can enhance the quality of a photo of the sun. The sky can look dramatic with a haze, while sunlight through the clouds can spark some rich colors in the photo. John Day, the late co-author of “The Book of Clouds”, (cited in SignOnSanDiego.com) said the best sunsets generally occur when there are mid-level clouds present, either alto-stratus or alto-cumulus. Those clouds often produce the deep, red sunsets. When sunlight hits cirrus clouds near sunset, they tend to turn orange or yellow. Big, puffy cumulus clouds usually do not produce colorful photos.

Adhering to Safety

One must take care of their eyes when taking photos of the sun. Staring at the sun can cause eye damage and staring through a lens with the naked eye that is potentially a magnifier will increase this risk. The camera can also suffer a lot of damage if it is pointed directly at the sun. EPHOTOzine recommends framing up with the sun just out of shot and repositioning to take the photo, whilst not looking directly at the sun. People who use a long lens must avoid looking through the viewfinder when the sun is in the frame.

The State of Michigan is blessed with the riches of unspoiled nature, the world’s longest freshwater coastline, lakes that look like oceans, shimmering beaches, miles of cherry orchards, spactabulas sunrises and sunsets, daytime skies of the deepest blue and nighttime skies scattered with stars everywhere.

Naturally beautiful models take naturally beautiful photographs. The truth is, without modeling poses and modeling tips, perfect photographs are harder than you think.

If you are a professional model, a photographer will most likely guide you through a variety of model poses throughout the photo shoot. But if you are an inspiring model and are still working your way up to the top, you may have to control your poses to ensure great headshots and sample modeling photographs.

Although sometimes concentration enhances a good photograph, obvious concentration can distract and often ruin a good photograph as well. Do not hold your breath for a modeling pose; always remember to breathe and appear at ease.

Bad posture is an unrecognized flaw in many people. However, for models, posture is a harmful flaw. Always remember to keep your back straight and your shoulders up. Slouching affects the mood of the photograph and enlarges the appearances of your stomach. In addition to your back and shoulders, always remember to flex your stomach muscles. Despite your weight or state of shape, your abdomen will appear more toned if you flex.

Symmetry is officially out in the modeling world. When posing, make sure to differentiate your arms and legs with asymmetrical poses. If you have one arm long and straight by your side, make sure the other arm is bent. Whether a big or small angle, the bend will make the modeling pose look more real, less artificial. Continue the asymmetry to your legs. If one leg is locked straight, give the other leg a casual bend.

Although the camera is the ultimate focal point of a modeling photo shoot, great models do not look directly into the camera. To enhance the quality of your photo shoot, look away from the camera with a mix of head and eye poses. Looking off to the right or left side, or tiling your neck to either side can help you avoid direct eye contact with the camera. In many cases, your head and neck can remain stationary in your modeling pose—and your eyes can do all the work. Head and eye positions, coupled with personable facial expressions make for great model poses.

If you are sitting down during your photo shoot—don’t think it’s ok to slack off. In fact, sitting photo shoots require a lot of extra work. If you are sitting down or reclining, it’s important to put your eight on the back of one thigh, rather than distributing your weight equally on both thighs. If you roll one hip up from the ground or surface, shifting your weight will be simple. This pose results in a slimming effect that you don’t want to miss out on.

To make sure your best assets shine, there are a few basic guidelines to follow. Based on two distinct poses, a forward lean and a backward lean, any model with any breast size can maximize cleavage. When leaning forward, either bring your arms together at your waist, keep your arms straight at the elbows and clasp your hands together below your waist, or simply cross your arms. When leaning backward, raise your arms about your shoulders and head, keep your arms apart, and always slouch for the best cleavage results.

If you have a naturally beautiful smile—show your pearly whites with pride, just not every time. If you smile in each modeling pose, modeling agents will notice your lack of versatility, not your smile. To add variety to your modeling poses, try switching up your smile with a cute frown, a bratty bout, a friendly laugh, or even an edgy scowl. Your facial expressions can make or break your modeling poses. Let your smile show, but make sure to show what else you can do.

In addition to these personalized tips for modeling poses, every model should be aware of the basics of posing. There are 4 main types of model poses: lifestyle pose, movement pose, portrait pose, and body pose.

The lifestyle pose evokes a sense of everyday living with common body movements and facial expressions. Throughout the day, moments of happiness, love, anger, and hope arise. To succeed at the lifestyle pose, each model must be able to recreate these everyday emotions.
The movement pose captures a specific action, such as running or jumping. Because this pose is most often used for a marketing photo shoot—the model is used to promote a product. Each model must be able to smile and laugh when using the products in the photo shoot.

This modeling pose emphasizes the face of the model—and relies purely on facial features. The model will be in modest makeup and relaxed hair and should pose with a casual, genuine smile. Many portrait photographs are close up and emphasize details of the model’s face. If you are scheduled for a portrait photo shoot, make sure to pay extra attention to your skin and drink at least 8-12 glasses of water a day.

Full-length photographs require body poses. Models are encouraged to shift weight between hips and make arms and lengths into asymmetrical stances. Although many body poses do not require specific facial expressions, putting your entire body into character during full-length poses helps your body find a natural balance.

Keep these insider model posing tips in mind during your next professional model photo shoot to ensure you blow the photographer away. Whether you’re a trained expert or an ambitious beginner, all models have the ability to excel in photo shoots. Focus on your posture, attitude, and facial expressions to succeed beyond your wildest expectations.

Additionally, my Gallery on Mackinac Island was surprisingly busy and many potential brides stopped in and I had the opportunity to view my work up-front and personal. I really enjoyed the opportunity. It was a banner year for me totaling (33) Weddings, (5) Wedding Engagements, three of which were surprises, I really enjoy the surprise engagements, (4) Family Reunions, (2) Graduation parties, and (2) Conferences, including the “Pure Michigan Governors Conference” held at the Grand Hotel last May. I have been commissioned again to photograph the 2011 conference in Kalamazoo in March. I will highlight that later in the blog.
