2012 Weddings on Mackinac Island were just Fabulous.

The weather for most of the season was warm and sunny. The Brides and Grooms were so kind and happy to be on Mackinac Island for a special Destination Dream Wedding. Family and friends made for the most pleasurable season ever. The smiles were “spactabulas”. The countless hours that are put into making your special day is endless, from scheduling all the important meetings from the dress, tuxes, venues, music, reception, minister, ceremony venue, guest list, photographers, guest room for all your friends & family, and then you arrive to catch your Wedding boat to Mackinac Island. When you arrive you are picked up by horse and buggy and taken to your Hotel/Inn/Resort and your Wedding dreams begin. That’s where a local photographer is your best friend for your special day. There’s something to say about knowing the special places on the Island and the years of experience that brings you additional entertainment, surprises and just Pure Michigan fun.

I know these pictures will put a smile on your face and joy in your heart.

Below are just a few pictures from the 2012 season.

It is located in Lake Huron, at the eastern end of the Straits of Mackinac, between the state’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas. The island was a Native American settlement before European exploration began in the 17th century. It served a strategic position amidst the commerce of theGreat Lakes fur trade. This led to the establishment of Fort Mackinac on the island by the British during the American Revolutionary War. It was the scene of two strategic battles during the War of 1812.

In 1886, the Michigan Central Railroad, Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad, and Detroit and Cleveland Steamship Navigation Company formed the Mackinac Island Hotel Company. The group purchased the land on which the hotel was built and construction began, based upon the design by Detroit architects Mason and Rice. When it opened the following year, the hotel was advertised to Chicago, Erie, Montreal and Detroitresidents as a summer retreat for vacationers who arrived by lake steamer and by rail from across the continent. At its opening, nightly rates at the hotel ranged from US$3 to US$5 a night

Grand Hotel’s front porch is purportedly the longest in the world at some 660 feet (200 m) in length, overlooking a vast Tea Garden and the resort-scale Esther Williamsswimming pool. These areas are often used by guests on a casual family vacation, for large conventions, or concerts during the hotel’s annual Labor Day Jazz Festival. The hotel has drawn some criticism for its charging a $10 fee for non-guests to enter the building and enjoy the view from the famous porch

The first land in the Upper Peninsula celebrating Mackinac’s Lilac collection began in 1949 after a conversation with Evangilene “Ling” Horn and Nurse Stella King who encouraged the then teen and today’s Mackinac Island Carriage Tours veterinarian Dr. Bill Chambers to have a parade on Lilac Sunday, to bring people to the Island to enjoy a great horse drawn parade amidst the lovely lilacs that fragrance the Island in June. What began as a one day event called the Mackinac Island Lilac Day has blossomed into a ten day festival. Look forward to seeing you.

A Recipe for Great Lilacs
by Jeff Young

Mr. Young is the Lilac Curator at the University of Vermont Horticultural Research Center and is a Vermont Master Gardener and Park Arborist. He presented the Walk and Talk with Lilacs program during the Mackinac Island Lilac Festival in June.

Lilac Culture
Common Lilacs need to have 9-12 canes for each 6 feet

Leave at least 2 feet between mature Lilacs.

Plant new shrubs 16 feet apart (circular shape)

Allow for a few more canes if you are planting as a hedge with less depth.

Use the ratio of canes (9-12 per 6’ in dia.) to the space available. Use the drip line as your perimeter

Determine the canes to be removed or added.

If too many canes, consider the oldest canes for removal first, leaving good spacing between canes.

If not enough canes, pick one or two of the best suckers each year until there are enough.

Once the Lilac is established, consider adding one new cane and removing the oldest cane each year to create a vigorous, healthy full flowering plant.

Lilacs like full sun or at least 10 hrs/day. If sun is limited sun should be full in the morning.

Avoid excessively windy locations, cold won’t kill a lilac, but wind will.

When placing a plant look for what surrounding trees will look like in the future.

Lilacs don’t like wet feet; they need good drainage, slopes are best.

Lilac Health
Apply 2” of compost each spring 18” on either side of the drip edge

Apply 2” of ground bark mulch each spring from 18” outside of the drip edge toward the center

Keep mulch 6” away from any cane.

In succeeding years work the compost into the previous year’s compost and mulch

Reduce compost and mulch accordingly to avoid a buildup of over 4”

Lilacs like 7.0 to 7.3 pH, normally lime the soil along with the mulch.

If you suspect the soil has a pH lower than 6.5, do a soil test.

Normally, 3-4 cups of pelleted lime for a mature shrub, more if the pH is below 6.5.

Fertilizer should not be necessary, but

If the Lilac needs a boost after a drought or excessively wet year, use sparingly (2-3 cups) of 5-10-5 or 4-12-8;

Always apply any fertilizer along with the mulch.

The number one reason Lilacs decline is soil compaction.

Avoid fertilized lawn to about 18” outside the drip edge.

Avoid heavy foot traffic or lawn tractors to 2-3 feet from the drip edge.

Do not use herbicide (weed and feed) to within 10’ down slope of the Lilac.

The second reason Lilacs fail is string trimmer and lawn mower damage.

Small bark damage will limit the health of a shrub, weaken the cane and make it susceptible to disease.

Lilac Pruning
Heavy pruning should be done right after the flowers have passed.

Spring pruning should be done to remove winter damage.

Deadheading the lilac will improve the shrubs ability to flower each year; and producing seed.

Most lilacs are cultivars, they can only be reproduced by cloning.

Seed from a cultivar will always be a different shrub

By allowing a lilac to seed, there is a risk of a new plant with a different flower.

Look for disease several times a year. lilac borer is rare, lilac leaf miner common.

Kill lilac borer in the hole, seal any hole with garden wax or potters clay, evaluate each year

Leaf miner usually does minimal damage and is easily recognized by its ink spot signature

For leaf miner, remove ink spot section of the leaf and destroy.

Most other disease issues are addressed by good maintenance practices.

Located on Astor Street, middle of town, between Main & Market streets.

This is a Genuine Mackinac Island Lilac

Much time and research went into this plant. First a search for the perfect Mackinac tree, then the long genetic process…. finally, this clone.

Mackinac Island(also known as “Lilac Isle”) is home to the world famous Mackinac Island Lilac Festival which draws thousands of visitors every June. Your lilac tree can be enjoyed for generations and makes a perfect gift for any milestone event.

Lilacs are revered as the most beautifully scented of all blooming plants. Mackinac Island’s lilac trees are known to be centuries old, extremely hearty and prolific bloomers.

Clusters of lavender flowers bloom in the spring. Lilacs thrive in full sun, but can be planted in partially shaded areas.

Artistic Mackinac Gallery & Studio has many of these Lilacs mounted exclusively on Canvas. If you are planning a trip to Mackinac Island this summer please stop by and visit, relax and enjoy the colors.

This is actually the hybrid lilac Sensation which blends the white and purple colors from two different plants into one. When it starts to go to white that means eventually the entire bush will revert back to one color over the next decade or so.

The 2012 season is officially upon us. Welcome to Artistic Mackinac Gallery & Studio on Beautiful Mackinac Island. Our featured artist this year is internationally known “Noel Skiba”. She will be painting off and on throughout the summer season at the gallery. It is truly a pleasure to watch her paint.

Featuring Four Seasons on Mackinac, Round Island Lighthouse, Mackinac Bridge, many of the historic building, Grand Hotel, Flowers on Mackinac, Somewhere in Time memorability. We have full time photographers to photograph your special day weather it’s your wedding, family reunion, engagements, graduation, or just a last minute portrait of your family while visiting Mackinac Island.
Steven Blair, Island photographer, owner of Artistic Mackinac Gallery & Studio has been photographing on Mackinac Island for over 20 years. A Freelance and Wedding photographer.

This spring the Gallery went through a complete remodel that has been needed for many years. It’s now a very quaint and pleasant atmosphere to view Photograph Art as I have envisioned for many years. A place you can relax and enjoy some Island art.

One of many new features on canvas for 2012. Four Seasons on Mackinac.

The lilacs are in bloom and the sweet aroma is breathtaking.

One of my favorite canvases is the Lilacs that shine on Mackinac Island.

The wild flowers on Mackinac Island are intense this time of year. From Lilacs to Trillium’s and Lady Slippers in the wooded hills.

The story of lilac, according to Greek mythology, begins with a beautiful nymph named Syringa (lilac’s botanical name). Captivated by her beauty, Pan, the god of the forests and fields, chased Syringa through the forest. Frightened by Pan’s affections, Syringa escaped him by turning herself into an aromatic bush – the flower we now refer to as lilac.

In October ever year the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island has a “Somewhere In Time” weekend. Period dress is prevalent in and around the Island. The dress attire is very unique to this period and once your dressed the atmosphere is magical. The weekend is full of music and dance and I have so enjoyed being a part of the special weekend through the years. To have had the opportunity to photograph this event has been timeless. Below are a few of 100′s of pictures from “Somewhere In Time”. Someday again I look forward to dancing with Jane Seymour just one more time. Hope you enjoy this story.

Somewhere In Time, was filmed at Grand Hotel and on Mackinac Island in 1979 and released in 1980. This special weekend includes a screening of the film, discussions of the movie’s production process, visit with cast and crew that are invited back, and hotel guests are invited to make a cameo appearance in costume at the cocktail receptions, costume promenade, and Grand Luncheon Buffet. October of every year, weekend dates my change every year.

Somewhere in Time, which was primarily filmed on Mission Point property. The theater where you can see where Christopher Reeve sat in the theater scene, and two, the real Hollywood Sound Stage on property that was used during filming.

Pure Michigan Conference 2012 at the Amway Grand in Grand Rapids was the best conference ever. Over 900 participants this year and the mood was very positive. Michigan is ranked No. 7 nationally in both total and leisure travel by the U.S. Travel Association. From our Governor Rick Snyder and many of our State representatives and “Miss Michigan” Elizabeth Wertenberger. Also in attendance was Dan Musser from the Grand Hotel and Mary McGuire from the Travel and Tourism Bureau on Mackinac Island. Michigan was well represented at this conference. George Zimmermann the director of “Pure Michigan” and Steve Yencich director of the Michigan Lodging & Tourism Association along with the mayor of Grand Rapids George Heartwell presented us with a very bright outlook for the future of tourism in Michigan.
Tourism officials and industry analysts say the campaign is paying big dividends for Michigan: 2 million visitors who wouldn’t otherwise have visited, spending $605 million. And between 2009 and 2010, the tourism industry grew by $2 billion, enough to generate an additional 10,000 jobs for Michigan, they say.

“I think the Pure Michigan campaign has to rank among the most well-crafted and appropriate destination campaigns in the United States, Yesawich said. We focus on destination marketing. George Zimmermann is doing a terrific job, in a challenging economic environment, to make Michigan a summer seasonal destination.”“According to at least one study, Pure Michigan returns more than $2 in tax revenue for every $1 invested, making this a very successful program that takes pressure off future budgets. … Our first priority in Michigan is revitalizing our economy and creating jobs. The Pure Michigan campaign attracts thousands of new tourists to Michigan, creating opportunities for local business owners such as restaurants, gas stations, hotels, bait shops, boat rental companies, and everything in between. According to the 2010 study, the latest available, more than 2 million visitors who would not have traveled to Michigan otherwise spent $605 million statewide as a direct result of the $9.8 million Pure Michigan program. This research revealed that this new visitor spending generated $43 million in incremental state tax collections, creating a return on investment of $4.32 for each state dollar spent on tourism advertising”.

Key to Industry Success? Keep Working to Maintain Rapport with Policymakers

One of the biggest threats to our industry’s success is complacency. It would be easy to think now that we’ve won $25 million in annual funding for Pure Michigan, we can forget about legislators and just go back to work. But while improved, Michigan still ranks only 14th nationally in total tourism spending. (Shouldn’t we be in at least the top ten)? More importantly, doing nothing would eventually put us in the same place we were back in 2003, when our industry had no unified message and absolutely no collective rapport with legislators in Lansing.

If we want to make gains in the future, it’s important for us to continue to do the things that have brought us success in the past. We must continue to keep Michigan’s tourism Industry, it’s issues, and the important role tourism plays in our state’s economy in front of legislators, the media, industry stakeholders and the voting public, (especially in this election year).

That’s why MLTA created the Tourism Improving Michigan’s Economy (TIME) Alliance, Inc. Last fall, when 64 freshmen legislators had yet to complete their first year, TIME mailed a series of five letters to all members of the House and Senate to provide basic information on Michigan’s Tourism Industry. But orientation efforts can’t and didn’t stop there…

“Take TIME for Tourism” Radio Ad Campaign Delivers our Industry’s Message

As we move closer to all-important House elections, we’ve taken such efforts to the next level with the creation of the “Take TIME for Tourism” radio ad campaign. This initiative employs a series of 60 second radio ads which discuss basic tourism industry facts.

Thus far, seven ads have been produced and aired. However, the truly creative aspect of this campaign is that none of the ads are read by radio personalities. Instead, all ads feature the voices of the industry leaders who invested in this important informational campaign. While these are radio ads, our staff has added videos to each to make them a little more interesting. Here are six of the seven ads we’ve aired to date. Just click on the their names to listen to the ad.

Lilacs symbolize love.

Syringa (Lilac) is a genus of about 20–25 cultivated species of flowering plants in the olive family (Oleaceae).

In addition to the cultivated species of Lilacs, there are many more hybrids, and over 1,000 total varieties of Lilac bushes (along with a few varieties of actual trees).

Lilacs are native to Eastern Europe and Asia. The colonists brought them to America in the 17th century.

The term “Lilac trees” can be mistakenly attached to any of the many varieties of Lilac bushes. Lilac shrubs/bushes grow from six to twenty feet tall. True Lilac trees, like the Peking tree Lilac and the Japanese tree Lilac, both from Asia, may reach heights over 30 feet.

Lilacs can vary in shape and/or form. Some may be rounded, vase-like, tall and spreading, tall and straight or a combination of these shapes.

Flowering varies between mid-spring to early summer and, unfortunately, normally only lasts two to three weeks, depending on the species and the weather.

Lilac flowers span a wonderful array of colors (white, violet, blue, lilac, pink, red, purple and some even bicolored). Shades vary depending on weather (hot versus cool and dry versus wet), year, soil, environment and overall location differences.

Lilacs have pyramidal clusters of blossoms with both single and double varieties – all with glossy green leaves.

It is the cultivar and species of Lilac bush which affects the fragrance, NOT the flower’s color.

Aside from Roses, there is no flower as beautiful and aromatic as Lilacs. Of the two, Lilacs have a stronger, more intoxicating scent which carries quite a distance.

Although Lilacs display flowers among the most delicate of the ornamentals, the plants are among the hardiest. Some newer hybrid varieties can survive winter temperatures of -60ºF.

You prune Lilacs immediately after the enjoyment of the fragrant blossoms in the late Spring/early Summer.

Lilacs were grown in America’s first botanical gardens. Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew them in their gardens. Lilac bushes can live for hundreds of years, so who knows, a bush planted way back when may actually still be around…
